Compulsory and Higher Education
Since the opening and reform, Shenyang has been carrying out the strategy of "Prospering Shenyang through Science and Technology" keeping public-run education and civilian-run education co-existing with pre-school education, basic education, vocational education, higher education and after-work education developing harmonically. At present, Shenyang has 755 kindergartens, 1.274 primary schools, 362 middle schools, with 821,000 students, 89 vocational junior and senior middle schools with 55,000 students and 10 adult educational schools training 13,900 students annually.
Shenyang is one of the cities having concentrated universities and with 25 universities and colleges, among which there are 2 universities of carrying out the "National 211" Project, 20 universities and colleges under the administration of the province and the departments of the State Council, 5 universities or colleges under the administration of the municipality, with a total of 350,000 students, of them, 180,000 are stydying for PHD and master degrees, 180,000 for bachelor degrees.
The universities and colleges have perfect specialties setup and complete subjects, including science, agriculture, medical, literature, history, philosophy, administration, law, police, sports, art and So on.
The universities and colleges in Shenyang have powerful teaching and science researching abilities. At present, there are 39,000 staff in these universities or colleges, among whom, there are 17,000 full-time teachers, more than 870 full-time researchers, 13 academicians of the two Academies and 545 doctor student tutors. Also, these universities or colleges have 25 moving post doctor stations, 136 doctor training centers, 7 national project technology centers, 102 national and provincial subjects and 85 national and provincial labs. In recent years, these universities or colleges have published 1,130 monographs and more than 10,000 science articles at home and abroad, and got over 109 national invention patents and 187 science research awards of municipality and province above.
Booming Physical Education
Shenyang is one of the biggest sports cities and the cradle of sports talents. In recent years, mass sports have been popular, athletics sports have achieved good results, the reform of physical education has been furthering and the rapid development of the sports industry is pleasing.
Those mass sports, such as, "Shenzhou First Ring" Bicycle Race, Ascending TV Tower Competition and so on are popular. In 1998, Shenyang held the 1st Asia Sports Festival, which there were 39 countries and regions attending and had great influence in the world. Since 1999, Shenyang has held 3 world chess and card festivals and it becomes on of the cities of chess and card. By now, Shenyang has 15 big-sized gyms, over 40 swimming fields or halls, more than 300 bowling channels and more than 2,000 outdoors sports fields.
At the 2ndĦĦand4 th Notional City Games, Shenyang got three No. 1 in gold metals, metals and group total scores and was the leading to all participating cities. The shooting athlete Li Yuwei and women judo athlete Zhuang Xiaoyan from Shenyang got gold medal respectively at the 23 nd and 25 th Olympics Games. At the 14 th Asian Games in 2002, the athletes from Shenyang got 12 gold medals. The basketball team from Shenyang NO. 31 Middle School has successively got champion at the national middle school basker matches, adding refulgence to the sports development history of Shenyang
Football is also very popular in Shenyang .The football team from Shenyang Hui People Middle School got the champion at NIKE Cup International Middle School Football Match . Shenyang Football Team, as one of Class A ,is marching forward year after yea. In 2002, Shenyang successfully held "Top 10 Match" and at Wuli River Sports Center, the National Men Football Team won the match and realized the dream of "0ut of Asia and to the World" to take part in World Cup 2002.
