Geography   
Chaoyang is situated at the junction of Liaoning, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia Provinces.  Nearby cities include Fuxin, Jinzhou, Chifeng, Hulu Island and the historic city of Chengde in Hebei Province to the west.

History   
Chaoyang has a long history and a splendid culture. The world famous discovery of the Niuhe (Cattle River) and Lianghong Mountain cultural relics revealed that there was a large civilized societythere 5500 years ago. There are lots of cultural relics and traces of civilization, with more than 3400 historical remains found and thousands of cultural relics unearthed.  More than 2000 years ago, there were established counties named Liucheng, Longchen , Yingzhou, Xingzhong, and Three Towers.  The Former Yan, Latter Yan and North Yan about 1600 years ago all set up their capital for nearly one hundred years and made the area the political,economic and cultural center of Northeast Asia at that time. The culture of Chaoyang is rich. Famous Mongolian writer YinZhannayi and philosopher and socialist LuoBusang Quedan are among the people who have had a profound impact on the area.

Agriculture
The annual output of grains in the city is 1400 kilos and the output of fruit is 300 thousand tons. The city has an abundance of coarse cereals, cereals, tobacco, pigs, cattle and sheep, poultry and eggs, vegetables, and dried fruit.  In recent years a group of enterprises have been developed to process grains, tomatoes, and livestock products.

The weather in Chaoyang is characterized by a significant difference of temperature between night and day, long periods of sunlight, limited rainfall, and similar periods of heat and rain.

In recent years, plenty of trees have been planted, and the forests have changed from being a fuel and timber source into being a fruit producing area which includes mountain apricot trees. flat apricot trees and jujube trees with high dry weather adaptability.

Phoenix Mountain

This Phoenix Mountian is not as well known as the one near Dandong, but is rich in history.  It is 6 kilometers east of the Dalinghe River in the suburbs of Chaoyang.  Mu Ronghuang, the king of the Yan Period, built the Dragon Town (341 AD) there.  Three pagodas were built on the mountain, which were called "Heavenly Column Peaks" in the Yuan Dynasty.  In the Qing Dynasty, the mountain was renamed Phoenix Mountain and three temples were built on the mountian, one at the top, one halfway up the mountain, and one at the foot of the mountain. The Yunjie Temple structures are typical of the structures on the mountain.  The famous Chaoyang Cave at the top of the mountain is 3.3 meters wide, 4 meters high, with a 3.16-meter-long Sakyamuni Statue reclining in the cave.

Niuheliang Relics

The archaeological complex of Niuheliang, is a collection of late Neolithic Hongshan culture sites in Chaoyang. Niuheliang covers an area of almost 50 square kilometers with at least sixteen separate localities including cemetery areas and altars. Recent excavations at Niuheliang led by Guo Dashun of the Archaeology Society of China have revealed an abundance of jade artifacts, lending support for the notion of a Jade Age between Stone and Bronze ages in the region.
