Geography
Dandong is located in the southeast of Liaoning Province. It's the largest border city in China. The Yalu River separates it from the DPRK (North Korea). Dandong faces the Huanghai Sea. The topography ranges from 2-3 meters above sea level toward the south to 1000-1300 meters in the mountians north of the urban area. Huabozi Mountain is the highest at 1336.1 meters above sea level.
Administration and Population
The city of Dandong has jurisdiction over the cities of Fengcheng and Donggang, as well as the Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County, and including the districts of Yuanbao, Zhenxing, and Zhen'an. The population is around 2.5 million with more than 680,000 in urban areas.
Climate
It is the warmest and wettest area of the northeastern region. The annual average temperature is 7-9 degrees Celsius. There are 235-250 days of each year when the average temperature is above freezing. The annual precipitation is 900-1100 mm. July and August are the wettest with 550-630mm of precipitation.
Resources
Forests covers 51% of the land. The accumulated amount of timber is 28.11 million cubic meters. It is the primary forest region of Liaoning Province. The area is known for its springs. The temperature of water is generally 20-73 degrees Celsius including 3 places where the temperature is higher than 70 degrees Celsius. The most famous springs include Wulongbei, Yiquan, and Beijingzi. There are also over 50 kinds of metal and nonmetal mines.
Industry
The industry of Dandong mainly consists of light industry, textiles, and electronics. At present, the city has over 17,000 industrial enterprises producing more than 3000 kinds of commodities.
Wulong Mountain
The Wulong Mountain Forest Park located northwest of Dandong, The Mountain is 20- kilometer away from the center of the city. The main peak is 708.5 meters high. The exploited land area is 5 square kilometers. The peaks of the Wulong Mountain look great. There are dense trees, mysterious caves and various animals and plants, which compose the rich natural and human resources. In 2001, the Lingfengchan temple was constructed at the original site of Lingfeng temple, the Lingfengchan temple vigour is great, and layout is preciseness. It is the most large Buddhism Temple in northeast of China, The Wulong Mountain Forest Park is a natural arboretum, and also a natural stone carving park, above the Lingfengchan temple, there are so many big and small imaginable stone figure, they make people imagine endlessly, The Wulong Mountain famous for grand, danger, quiet, astonish and wonderful. Always the tour famous Scenery spot. The Wulong Mountain Forest Park Scenery Spot includes the Wulong Mountain and the Wulongbei Hot Spring. The Wulongbei Hot Spring has a long history and possesses complete facilities.
Yalu River Scenic Spot
The Yalu River is a river on the border between China and North Korea. The Yalu River Scenic Spot lies in Dandong area at the middle and lower reaches of the Yalu River that starts from the mouth of the Hun River on the east and flows into the Big East Port on the west. The Yalu River¡¯s overall length is 210 kilometers and its total area is 824.2 square kilometers (including the water area that belongs to Korea). The area of the protection zone is 200 square kilometers.
The Yalu River Scenic Spot is located geographically in an advantageous position. It is warm in winter and cool in summer. There are clear waters and green hills. At the Yalu River Scenic Spot, people can generally survey the scene of both China and Korea, which makes the spot unique.
Yalu River Scenic Spot has been developed as Dandong's largest tourist attraction. It is lined with restaurants, both Chinese and Korean, and venders selling North Korean souvenirs and a look through a telescope. You can get stamps, money, and even a Kim Il Sung pin, although it may a replica. There are various ways to view the other side of the river. Taking the boat into North Korean waters is probably the most popular followed by a walk out on the restored bridge that was bombed by US forces during the Korean war. As you walk out to it's twisted metal end (a catwalk has been built around it for better viewing) halfway across the river, there are pictures along the bridge telling of the origins of the bridge, it's impressive Japanese drawbridge design, and it's bombing. The only thing left on the other side is the cement pilings because the North Korean half was never restored.
BaishiLizi Nature Preserve
BaishiLizi Nature Preserve is located in the north of Kuandian County, it¡¯s 137km from Dandong. There is bushy forests, ancient trees and high mountains in the preserve. The environment is very good here, Overlooking those mountains, you will see many strange stones and crags, giving it the name Baishizi. This preserve belongs the Qianshan branch of Changbai Mountain and it stretches in all directions with the highest peak as the center. There are 18 mountains that are more than 800m high, 8 mountains that are over 1000m high, the highest peak is 1270.5m high, the lowest one is 400m high in the preserve. There are 11 big valleys here, the cliff is 200-600m deep. The highest mountain stands towards southeast side. Four mountains are headstreams of Nangu River, Beigu River, Pushi River and Niumaowu River respectively, and there is a fountain on the west side of the top of the highest mountain. When the fountian erupts, the water forms a great mountain waterfall.
